hello my friends,
it is hot in Dhaka. we have re-entered rainy season, as of last saturday - the first big storm. this week it stormed almost every day, flash flooding sometimes and lightning that goes in horizontal curly-ques across the sky, multiple streaks at a time. the rain doesn't happen til evening, and the lightning is a follow-up night-time light show extravaganza.
the air outside is like pasta water. walking outside is like lifting the lid off a pot of boiling pasta and sticking your nose down into the steam - there is something in the air, and it is heavy and hot.
the electricity was consistent during dry season, but now is at it's least reliable yet. we have power on and off, about every other hour. the nights are hot, because the AC turns off but doesn't turn back on automatically. i pour sweat all evening long. it's a bit gross
i have itchy legs, and i think it may be a "heat rash" which people around here talk about. that or ant bites. Dave knows another reasons for my itching legs, and if you want a very good laugh then you should ask him about it. please ask him about it.
track has been the life of the party for the past 4 weeks. today we had our local track meet: 200 runners from 8-3, non-stop. the school paid a service to come and install a temporary bamboo-pole awning around the whole 200 meter track and bleachers... called a "shamayana"... so that the runners and watchers would be in the shade. this was CLUTCH. i love being "coach" and emptied my lungs out today, of all the yells they held. the kids ran their best, we were proud.
i'm happy but missing Dave, most of all, and counting down the days til home. as always, feeling very lucky to have a safe clean home to go to.
