just a little update...
a few days ago i got back from a really, really nice visit in northern thailand with my mom and dad and my aunt leigh. we had a great time seeing the rural north of thailand - so far as the borders with Laos and Burma/Myanmar. we got soaked with "Songkran" or Thai New Year water fighting in the streets and this was hilarious. also we all took a Thai cooking class and made very edible versions of Pad Thai and Green Curry and Tom Yum Soup, and i'm feeling glad that i have at least some kind of cooking skill to bring home to Dave. also, a very cool thing, we went to a factory and watched silk moths becoming worms who made cocoons which were boiled and separated into strands which were woven into beautiful Thai silk, of which we purchased for.... making a wedding dress. something to note here: mom is wonderful.
there is a lot more to tell about the Thailand trip, and pictures soon to be shared. if Mom and Dad and Leigh survive the trickery of Bangkok, they will have stories of Cambodia and Angkor Wat to add to this...
big things: tomorrow, Thursday April 23rd, me and 2 other coaches are taking our 30-person "SAISA (South Asian International Schools Association) track team to compete in New Delhi, India. we've had good practices this week, in the 100+ degree weather, and I'm feeling that it's a good time for us to go and have this competition. we'll stay with host families from the American Embassy School in Delhi, and the meet will be run over 2 days: Friday and Saturday. We'll fly back to Dhaka on Sunday.
the most difficult thing that is happening here now is the heat. it is so hot, and the power (AC and fans) stays off for at least half the night. it comes on and off, and we all tend to fall asleep when the air is on, then wake up in deep sweats startled and struggling to breathe in the still air oven that our top floor apartment becomes. it's pretty miserable, and i really have had trouble sleeping - waking up feeling a little panicked by the intensity of the heat. people expect the temperatures to remain high like this through the remainder of the school year - not too much longer now, about 7 weeks.
i have a ticket to leave Dhaka on June 14th.

last weekend i went to Kuala Lumpur for $120 - it was awesome
it was so good to get away from dhaka for a while.
this is ZIA international airport in dhaka on our way out of town... ongoing question: females? they're out there somewhere.
i was very excited to drink nice coffee drinks.
i was even more excited about these towers. really i went a little crazy over them. about a year ago i made a birthday cake for Dave in the shape of these things - 30th bday! the cake involved purple icing and nerds, and the experience brought about a love for the structural ingenuity of these buildings. i really wish we could've seen them together... but next time - inshallah.
Petronas Towers: world's tallest building from '96-'03, when TaiPei 101 stepped in. Malaysians love these gals
KL felt like china in so many ways. here is a market scene... lots of knock-offs
we spent a good amount of time enjoying nightlife. this place was appropriately named Rum Jungle. there was an african band, and a tank full of baby sharks above the bar.
traveling with Jimmy, Jason, and Beckley (left to right).
hmm.

a lil update
hello my friends,
it is hot in Dhaka. we have re-entered rainy season, as of last saturday - the first big storm. this week it stormed almost every day, flash flooding sometimes and lightning that goes in horizontal curly-ques across the sky, multiple streaks at a time. the rain doesn't happen til evening, and the lightning is a follow-up night-time light show extravaganza.
the air outside is like pasta water. walking outside is like lifting the lid off a pot of boiling pasta and sticking your nose down into the steam - there is something in the air, and it is heavy and hot.
the electricity was consistent during dry season, but now is at it's least reliable yet. we have power on and off, about every other hour. the nights are hot, because the AC turns off but doesn't turn back on automatically. i pour sweat all evening long. it's a bit gross
i have itchy legs, and i think it may be a "heat rash" which people around here talk about. that or ant bites. Dave knows another reasons for my itching legs, and if you want a very good laugh then you should ask him about it. please ask him about it.
track has been the life of the party for the past 4 weeks. today we had our local track meet: 200 runners from 8-3, non-stop. the school paid a service to come and install a temporary bamboo-pole awning around the whole 200 meter track and bleachers... called a "shamayana"... so that the runners and watchers would be in the shade. this was CLUTCH. i love being "coach" and emptied my lungs out today, of all the yells they held. the kids ran their best, we were proud.
i'm happy but missing Dave, most of all, and counting down the days til home. as always, feeling very lucky to have a safe clean home to go to.
